Prototyping a nationwide real estate platform for a startup

Key features include user registration and profile setup, where agents can specify their licensing states, counties, budget ranges, specialties, and languages spoken. The platform facilitates easy referral creation, enabling agents to select relevant criteria and communicate with potential partners. It also includes deal management tools to track referral agreements and payments. A premium subscription offers enhanced access to features, while a dedicated section allows users to explore their referral history. Problem Statement

Brokers Bridge was created to address the difficulties real estate agents face in the referral process. Agents often lose clients who are relocating because they don't have a reliable way to connect with agents in other locations. The challenge is to find agents who specialize in specific areas or with particular expertise to meet clients' unique needs, and to ensure client satisfaction. Without a streamlined process for referrals, agents can struggle to manage and track their referrals, and may have difficulty collecting their referral fees. The absence of a broad network also limits agents' reach, hindering their ability to expand their business beyond local markets. In essence, the core problem is connecting clients with the ideal agent, regardless of location or specific needs.

At the same time, the client needed guidance on where to spend their limited resources to find product-market fit. The client knew it also had to spend money on marketing and bring users to the platform and they didn't know how to organize and eventually scale with a native mobile app.

Objectives

  • To address the challenges of real estate referrals, develop a nationwide referral platform exclusively for real estate agents.
  • Create the platform as a web application that allows agents to connect with one another and share referrals.
  • Follow an MVP (most viable product) development process to launch an initial version of the system as a prototype to validate the core concepts and prove product-market fit.
  • Stay within the client's budget and provide guidance on how to build a user base in a cost-effective way.

Methodology

During the discovery process and initial meetings with the client, we work together creating mockups and wireframes to understand the user experience and how workflows are designed so the application is intuitive and easy to use. This allows the client to visualize the platform and provide feedback before we start the development phase.

Solution

Our approach centered on creating a platform focused on the minimum viable product to streamline referral process among real estate agents and enhance their ability to connect with one another. We built a web application using PHP, Bootstrap and Vue, allowing us to iterate rapidly while getting continuous feedback from the client to create a responsive and user-friendly experience. The platform was initially launched as a prototype to validate the core concepts and ensure it met the needs of Brokers Bridge users.

Brokers Bridge connects real estate agents through property referrals that they are unable to sell themselves. Agents can publish details about these properties which becomes referrals that are accessible to other registered brokers within the app. Key features of the prototype include:

  • User registration and profile customization, allowing agents to specify their licensing states, counties, budget ranges, specialties, and languages spoken
  • Intuitive referral creation interface where agents can define location, type, budget, language requirements, and specialties needed
  • Automated referral matching system that notifies qualified agents of new opportunities based on their profile criteria
  • Built-in communication tools for agents to discuss referral details and collaborate on deals
  • Comprehensive deal management system for tracking timelines, agreements, and referral fee payments
  • Premium subscription model offering enhanced access to platform features
  • Detailed referral history section for monitoring past transactions and performance metrics

Results

The Brokers Bridge prototype was successfully launched after approximately 3 months of development and has been well-received by real estate agents. The platform has received positive feedback for its intuitive design and functionality, and has been used to facilitate referrals among agents.
